On January 15, Beijing Off-Road officially unveiled its all-new model, the BJ40 Explorer. As a core entry-level product marking the deep implementation of the brand's strategic transformation, it plays a pivotal role in both the dual-track layout of fuel and new-energy powertrains and the expansion of the brand's boxy off-road product lineup. More importantly, it highlights Beijing Off-Road's successful shift from a purely professional off-road tool to a full-scenario off-road lifestyle vehicle.

The BJ40 Explorer carries forward the brand's signature hardcore off-road design while integrating youthful, modern elements. Up front, the classic five-slot grille features an all-black finish, paired with sharp-edged LED headlamps accented by black inner trim rings, delivering a strong blend of technology and aggression. The heavy-duty off-road front bumper is complemented by a silver skid plate underneath and red tow hooks on both sides, striking a perfect balance between practicality and visual impact.

Along the sides, the boxy, upright body lines not only ensure ample headroom but also reinforce the vehicle's tough off-road character. Blacked-out window surrounds and exterior mirrors, combined with 17-inch black off-road wheels and subtly visible red brake calipers, create a bold, sporty stance. An industry-unique quick-release removable hardtop allows for fast manual removal, instantly transforming the BJ40 Explorer into an open-top off-roader to suit diverse driving scenarios.

Smart technology takes center stage, led by a 15.6-inch floating touchscreen with high resolution, vivid visuals, and smooth responsiveness, significantly enhancing the user experience. Powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 flagship chipset and paired with a generous 16GB + 128GB memory configuration, the system handles multitasking with ease, putting an end to lag and slow responses.
A 12.3-inch full LCD digital instrument cluster supports multiple display modes, clearly presenting key information such as vehicle speed and engine RPM in real time, providing precise support for off-road driving.
In terms of comfort and convenience, the BJ40 Explorer comes well equipped with an electronic gear selector, automatic climate control, ambient lighting, and a multifunction steering wheel. The steering wheel integrates controls for cruise control, voice commands, and more, enabling intuitive, eyes-free operation that enhances driving safety and overall ease of use.
Powerful Performance to Meet Diverse Needs
The BJ40 Explorer is offered with both gasoline and diesel powertrains, catering to a wide range of driving scenarios. The gasoline version is powered by a 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum output of 180 kW (approximately 245 hp) and 395 N·m of peak torque, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. Power delivery is strong and smooth, making city overtaking and off-road climbing equally effortless.
The diesel version features a 2.0T diesel engine producing 120 kW (around 163 hp) and a robust 400 N·m of peak torque. With its clear low-end torque advantage, maximum torque is available from just 1,500 rpm, ensuring confident performance in demanding off-road conditions. Combined with an 85-liter fuel tank, it offers a driving range of over 900 km, making long-distance expeditions possible without frequent refueling.

The BJ40 Explorer carries forward its hardcore off-road DNA with exceptional all-terrain performance. Its body-on-frame (non-unibody) construction offers high torsional rigidity, providing solid reliability in extreme conditions. An electronically controlled part-time four-wheel-drive system comes standard across the lineup, allowing manual switching between 2WD and 4WD. In low-range 4WD (4L) mode, torque is amplified by 2.5 times, making steep climbs effortless.
Select variants are equipped with triple differential locks, ensuring equal torque distribution to all four wheels in challenging scenarios such as cross-axle terrain, enabling rapid and confident recovery. The vehicle also boasts impressive off-road geometry, with generous approach and departure angles, high minimum ground clearance, and strong wading capability. Combined with KMAN nitrogen shock absorbers, 11 ATS all-terrain driving modes, and a 12-speed crawl control system, the BJ40 Explorer can easily tackle a wide variety of complex and demanding terrains.
